Keep Pathology Bulk Billed on 9news.com.au
CEO of Australian Pathology, Liesel Wett, was interviewed by 9News Canberra on the urgent need to index funding for pathology in this year’s Federal Budget.
“We don’t want to see mums with kids, or cancer patients, have to choose whether they get their pathology test or not,” Australian Pathology’s chief executive Liesel Wett told 9news.com.au.
“Seventy per cent of all medical decisions rely on pathology, and 100 per cent of cancers are diagnosed by a pathologist,” Wett said.
“We know that GPs and other health care professionals can’t do their jobs without pathology.
“We have seen what has happened in general practice and we don’t want pathology to become like bulk billing for GPs, which is becoming harder to access and making healthcare more expensive.
“Obviously, it will be up to individual companies to decide what they do if there is no investment in pathology tests.
“But we don’t want to see mums with kids, or cancer patients, have to choose whether they get their pathology test or not.”
